Planned Engagd Upgrade

Friday, June 6th, 2008

This is a courtesy warning that we will be taking Engagd offline for a few days while we upgrade the platform to a new improved version.

While the updates are mostly geared towards improving the platform and the APIs, there are a few subtle UI improvements to make using the platform a little usable.

A limited list of the changes include:

  • Better error handling and correction.
  • Blank documents not longer return a exception message, and instead return a blank form of the requested document.
  • Better profiling results.
  • Faster, more immediate profiling.
  • ItemRank is far more stable and reliable with its ranked feeds.
  • Many other enhancements.

These upgrades are expected to take quite some time to deploy, so we ask that you be patient during the migration and we apologize for any inconvenience.

New Profiler ‘Unsubscribe’ API

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

In the continued effort to increase the number of features and usability of the Engagd platform, we are happy to announce a new API call for profiler.engagd.com to unsubscribe from all Attention Data sources with one call.

We thank the guys at ma.gnolia for suggesting this feature and more information about how to use the new API call can be found at the Engagd Profiler wiki.

Jaiku and APML

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

Google’s aquisition of Jaiku is a great indication of Google’s faith in Lifestreaming. Lifestreaming, of course, is an aggregation of your social Attention Data - a rich source of gestures that indicate your interests. Gestures that can be converted to an APML Attention Profile.

Read more about how to convert your Jaiku RSS feed into APML at Marjolein’s great post.

Bloglines announces intention to support APML

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

We have covered Blogline’s announcement of OpenID support and upcoming APML support over on the Particls blog.

From the post:

Bloglines has announced support for OpenID and an intention to support oAuth and APML.This is great news for users who want to take control of their Attention Profiles. We expect this to be the first of a number of announcements from larger players over the winter.

Thanks to Eric Engleman (New GM at Bloglines) for his support of open standards and user rights - he is really shaking things up over at Bloglines in the best way possible. Having spoken to Eric myself, it is clear that he has a keen understanding of the issues and is dedicated to creating an improved feed reading experience while giving users ownership of their own metadata.

You can read more on the Bloglines Blog.

You can, of course, implement your own APML support with just a few lines of code using Engagd.

Further Coverage:

Ross Dawson from Future Exploration Network has written a very thoughtful piece about the growing APML movement and its implications for user control and advertising.

Ian Forrester from BBC has covered the announcement.

Elias Bizannes from PWC has also chimed in.

Daniela from Dow Jones has written a post. She may consider moving back to Bloglines now!

Duncan Riley over at Techcrunch has picked up the news also.

Creating an APML file from your Lifestream

Friday, August 31st, 2007

Lifestreaming is back in the news again.

What many don’t mention, however, is that Lifestreaming is actually a stream of Attention Data. It is a rich source of key gesture/pointers about your interests and activities.

Attention Data can of course be converted into Attention Profiles. Attention Profiles, formatted into APML can be used to instantly personalize your Internet experience.

Dandelife is an Engagd partner that lets you create great lifestreams that also result in APML files. Cluztr lets you convert your clickstream into APML as well. Of course you can also take your existing lifestream RSS feed and plug it directly into Engagd.com’s profiler service.

Converting Lifestreams into APML Attention Profiles is emerging as a key piece of the Attention Economy. An economy where a user’s behaviour and interests helps her have a better Internet experience. More importantly, however, her Profile is her own. She controls it. And it exists outside any one propietary silo.

So - to get and promote your own APML file simply:

  1. Add your Lifestream RSS feed to Engagd’s Profiler and it will generate a living, hosted APML file for you
  2. Make sure you set your APML file to PUBLIC so others can access it.
  3. Use one of these graphics to link to it on your blog/website

Cluztr Links to Users APML

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

A recent update to Cluztr now allows users to view (and download) their APML data. Jon from Cluztr is one of the first entrepreneurs to officially support APML and the Engagd services to convert attention data into APML for its users.

Cluztr.com a great service which monitors and selectively tracks your click stream, so it’s a great fit for the profiler.engagd.com APIs – a set of services which takes web pages/syndicated feeds and profiles them against a specific user. I’ve been using Cluztr for a few weeks now, and so far I am surprisingly impressed with how useful it has become- effectively replacing the “history” list in the browser which I’d often use to re-find past pages I found that were interesting - but which I had not sent to Magnolia, or if I was on a different PC. Since originally installing the Firefox plug-in on my home PC, it has recently been also added to my office PC.

The team here at Engagd would like to congratulate Jon for rolling out this APML support so quickly into Cluztr for its users.

Other developers can sign-up for an Engagd developer key to access the rest of the free Engagd APIs at developer.engagd.com.
